The Vickie Remoe Prize for Journalism and New Media

Now accepting applications for the 2024 Vickie Remoe Prize for Journalism and New Media. Eligibility: Sierra Leonean resident in Sierra Leone. Women and Persons with Disabilities Encouraged To Apply. Deadline for submission is February 28, 2024.

PRIZES IN JOURNALISM AND NEW MEDIA 2023 - 2024

The Vickie Remoe Prize highlights emerging journalists and new media content creators for excellence, originality, and creativity. The Vickie Remoe Prize Board selects winners. Winners will be announced every year in April. 

The following awards will be made annually in Journalism and New Media. The four categories include news writing, photography, broadcasting (TV), and content creation. Each category will split the number of prizes between male (s) and female (s) applicants. The prize will roll over to the next year if no man or woman submits a finalist application in one or more categories. The maximum prize amount to be awarded for 2024 is nLe. 200,000.

Eligibility

All applicants must be residents of Sierra Leone and hold Sierra Leonean citizenship. Candidates applying for the news writing prize must have no more than five years of experience as a practitioner. All other categories, including photojournalism, film, and content creation, are excluded. No newsprint candidates can apply, no matter their years of experience.

There is no age limit for participation. Women and People Living With disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Near and extended family members of Vickie Remoe are not ineligible. Vickie Remoe & Company staff and their family are also ineligible.

The Vickie Remoe Prize for News Writing

Awarded to a Sierra Leonean print journalist for an outstanding example of local or national news reporting, investigative reporting, explanatory reporting, or feature reporting demonstrating originality, lucid writing, clear presentation, and community connection. Award for NSL 10,000.  Prizes Available (4).

The Vickie Remoe Prize for Photography

Awarded to a Sierra Leonean photographer for a distinguished example of breaking news, documentary, and feature photography, which may consist of photographs not exceeding eight. The submitted pictures may depict one or multiple subjects. Do not change or manipulate the photos. Manipulation of images includes but is not limited to altering the colors (hue, saturation, tone), smoothness, or adding sharpness. Do not do anything to the images that will distort the original image. You may crop, add light, reduce light, and make minimal edits. Award for Nle 15,000. Prizes Available (2).

The Vickie Remoe Prize for Broadcasting (TV)

Awarded to a Sierra Leonean TV broadcast journalist or reporter for an outstanding example of local or national TV news reporting, investigative reporting, explanatory reporting, or feature reporting demonstrating originality, lucid writing, clear presentation, and community connection. Award for NSL 20,000.  Prizes Available (2).

The Vickie Remoe Prize for New Media

Awarded to a Sierra Leonean content creator or creative entrepreneur for an outstanding example of digital (new) media, including podcasts, vlogs, blogs, and video shorts (reels). The Prize will be divided into four categories: MicroBlog (Facebook), Podcast, Video Content (TikTok, Youtube), and Blog (World Wide Web). Award for Nle 10,000. Prizes Available (8).

  • MicroBlogs - select “microblog” if you post and create blog content for Facebook and do not have a web address.

  • Blogs - select “blog” if you have a website where you post your content.

  • Video Content Creators - select to submit your YouTube vlogs or TikTok, Facebook live, and Instagram videos.

  • Podcast - select to submit your podcast episodes.
